Jan Howland

Principal

My name is Jan Howland and I am the Principal of NSMS.  I have worked at NSMS 

for 20 years.  I studied Early Childhood while attending Meca Training Center in 

Hindsdale to obtain my Montessori Certification.  I started out as an Assistant 

and then worked as a teacher for 10 years.  I have been the Principal at NSMS 

for 10 years.  Working at NSMS has been a wonderful experience for me.   I love 

working with young children, watching their growth, and assisting parents with 

resources needed to compliment their early childhood years.  I also enjoy 

working with our Parent Board.

NSMS stands out from many preschools because of its beginnings as a parent run 

school.  NSMS still remains parent run.  We are in an excellent and very safe 

location (off the beaten path) with lots of windows and a location within 

walking distance to Olympic Pool, Arlington Heights Memorial Library and the 

Arlington Heights Historical Society.

Fun facts:

I grew up in a family of 8 children.  I raised 4 children here in Arlington 

Heights.  I have 5 grandchildren, one of which attends school here at NSMS, with 

another  granddaughter starting in 2011!

In my free time, I love to dance, practice yoga, bike ride, attend plays and I 

also love the pool!  I especially love spending time with my grandchildren, 

doing a lot of babysitting!!
